Alain Joséphine x Villa Guacana

From the outset of the project, Villa Guacana wanted to incorporate Guadeloupean talent, with architecture by Marc Jalet and artworks by Alain Joséphine.

The artist

Alain Joséphine was born in 1968 in Fort de France, Martinique, and is based in Guadeloupe. He holds a diploma in Fine Arts from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts et des Arts Décoratifs in Bordeaux, and passed the CAPES external d'Arts Plastiques exam at the IUFM in Martinique.

Already recognized locally, Alain Joséphine is now represented in London by the TAFETA gallery. He has exhibited in Paris, London, Dallas and New Delhi.

His approach

It was poetry that first linked Alain Joséphine to his childhood landscapes of peaks and bottoms. Then came painting, where this insular topography of bottoms and ridges became the main subject of his research. Body within nature. Nature all around the body, life in the tropics is a daily confrontation with the power of vegetation.

In these rugged lands, the relationship with natural space is physical, as is the relationship with his paintings. It is in the confrontation with painting that he constructs his own pictorial reality. The contrasts, the chiaroscuro, the glimpses of sky and earth, the flights of color manifest a whole sensitive architecture of these tropical spaces.

"Guacana" series

In 2023, inspired by the villa's exceptional panorama, Alain Joséphine created a series of paintings entitled "Guacana".

Alain Joséphine's paintings resonate with the architect Marc Jalet's architecture. They both work with space. The architect, by designing spaces in which to live and circulate. The artist, by seeking an impression of depth in his canvases.

In his paintings for the Villa Guacana, the artist has created a space where depth is suggested by the rhythm of colors. In the setting of Villa Guacana, Alain Joséphine's canvases give the sensation of bringing the blue of the outside in, sky and sea together, into the sleek rooms.

A partnership with La Maison Gaston

La Maison Gaston's ambition is to contribute to the recognition of artists from the French West Indies. That's why we're delighted to be associated with Villa Guacana, which offers a glimpse of Creole modernity.
